It began in 1966 with an expedition to Greenland for which Fjällräven took care of the equipment of the tents and rucksacks. It was this expedition that inspired Åke to design the perfect all-round outdoor jacket. Where the tents and backpacks received positive reactions, the researchers’ wool and leather outfits failed under the severe weather conditions of Greenland.
Åke quickly started experimenting and made the first designs on his mother’s Singer sewing machine. The fabric he used came from a piece of remaining tent material that turned out to be too heavy for a lightweight tent but served perfectly as a jacket. By applying his home-made wax, the jacket could repel water even more effectively. With this, the Greenland Wax and the G-1000 fabric were born.
Five types of G-1000
The own durable and versatile G-1000 fabric has been an important part of Fjällräven’s many functional and wear-resistant garments ever since. The tightly woven material, made from 65 percent polyester and 35 percent cotton, is treated with the Greenland Wax. This combination makes the G-1000 exceptionally durable and wind and waterproof. The fabric protects against mosquitoes (except G-1000 Lite and Air) and offers almost 100 percent protection against ultraviolet rays from the sun.
G-1000 is available in five versions, all of which have the advantages of the original fabric, but each with its specific characteristics. All options are also available in an Eco Version made from organic cotton and recycled polyester from PET bottles.
G-1000 Original
The perfect all-round outdoor material
G-1000 Original is still one of the basic materials of Fjällräven’s products. The tightly woven material is durable, wind- and waterproof and protects against UV rays and mosquitoes; perfect for lazy summer evenings at the campfire. And with the Greenland Wax, the fabric can easily be adapted to any adventure, regardless of the weather.
G-1000 Silent
Noiseless and soft
As the name suggests, this version of the G-1000 is designed to make as little noise as possible. The Silent variant is namely brushed which ensures that the material is less stiff and therefore silent while wearing. Practical during hunting and wildlife management activities.
G-1000 Lite
Light and airy
G-1000 Lite is lighter than the original fabric because for this version ripstop wires are used that make the fabric lighter and smoother. Due to the thinner fabric, the G-1000 Lite offers no protection against mosquitoes.
G-1000 HeavyDuty
Extra durable
G-1000 HeavyDuty is the extra strong and durable design of the fabric, which is mainly used for backpacks and bags, but also for strengthening garments. G-1000 HeavyDuty is also available in a softer, smoother version: the G-1000 HeavyDuty Eco S, made from recycled polyester and organic cotton.
G-1000 Air
Light and extra airy
G-1000 Air is an airy and comfortable fabric; ideal for both (sub) tropical conditions and the warmth of the Scandinavian summer. G-1000 Air is extra airy and even better ventilating than G-1000 Lite because it is loosely woven and has not been treated with wax. This version is not wind- and waterproof and not mosquito-proof.
