Never heard of Nigor? Then it might be time to look up their website. Nigor is a small brand that develops high-tech tents, intended for extreme camping trips. They are super light and have a small packing volume, so you can easily put them in your backpack, canoe or bike bag. And the brand is surprisingly very much Dutch.
We took the Kamao during a 7-day hike in the Pyrenees, in the middle of summer. Because we also had food for seven days, the low weight and volume of the Kamao was very welcome. We did not find it necessary to split the tent into two parts so that we could both carry one. With a just under two kilos, the Kamao is the perfect companion.
Every morning we packed the tent while it was still wet, but that did not affect the quality. As soon as we set the tent at the end of the day, the fabric was dry within half an hour. There was no extra stretch on the outside fabric due to the humidity or bright rays of the sun. The ventilation worked well: a small window with a mesh on the back and a double opening in the entrance.
The Kamao is a three-season tunnel tent for two people and has a single entrance. The special thing about the front entrance is the addition of two extra runners. With four runners you can open the zips in any way you want. That makes entering and exiting the tent very easier and you can control the amount of ventilation quite accurately. You can pitch the outside tent independently from the inner tent, the pegs are anodized eco-friendly and the Gorlyn 10 Denier curtain is extremely durable.
This makes Nigor a serious competitor to well-known brand such as Hilleberg.
Pitching & packing
Pitching the Kamao is not more than five minutes ork. The poles have a color that corresponds to the color on the opening of the outer tent fabric where you have to slide them in. At the bottom, Nigor has placed tension belts that make it possible to tighten the tent. You can pitch the tent with just four pegs, but if you want to be storm proof, it is advisable to use all of them. The lines have a special tensioning system where the rope clicks tight automatically. Many brands use this system, but in this case it just works a little bit easier. The only thing we had some doubts about is the storm line in the middle of the entrance, we preferred to let that one hang loose.
If you pack the tent again, you can shake most of the dewdrops off of the cloth. Put him it in the tent’s pack bag and you’re done. The could be made of slightly stronger material, but it doesn’t diminish the quality of the tent.
The subdued color is perfect for camping wild. It’s a discreet little tent that even allows you to fit your backpack into the inner tent, so you have enough space in the awning to free up a small cooking space. We preferred to place the backpacks at the head end, right at the entrance, easily accessible and everything inside protected from insects.
The space inside the tent is big enough for two hikers or cyclists while the packed tent makes such a small package it is a welcome addition to your pack.
