Review: Maloja MTB Freeride set – JoelM shorts & FalzM shirt

It might be a little late in the year to publish a review of a spring/summer freestyle short and shirts (and we would have liked to have done it before), but look outside today, the set we’re talking about is still very useful with this very nice Indian Summer like weather.

This summer I rode both in the Netherlands and in Spain with the JoelM Short and FalzM 1/2 Shirt, a freeride set from Maloja.

We have already reviewed kit from this rather young German outdoor clothing brand before and were enthusiastic about the cool combination between the freestyle / fashionable style of clothing and the functional characteristics of the products. In this set, once again we see the promise of function and stylishness combined. I know that style aspect depends on taste, but I do like baggy, and I also like clothing that would also make you not look completely ridiculous is regular daily life (as Lycra bike clothing will do).

Circumstances

I wore the set at rides between 20 and 30 kilometers, from 15 degrees in NL to 35+ degrees in Spain. All in all really hot. Both in the Netherlands on my home trails and in Spain in the Pyrenees and on the Costa Blanca it was always dry, dusty, and very, very hot.

JoelM Short

FalzM 1/2 Shirt

I’ve never rode a shirt with buttons before. So when I first put on this shirt it took some getting used to. But the loose fit of once again very light material, this time the “Alp Check” blend of Polyseter and Nylon offers very instant comfort and a very airy feel. On your back, at shoulder height, there are large ventilation slits that add to the overall breathability of the shirt. Which I am generally also satisfied with. With that I mean not only how warm or cold it feels, but also how well the shirt wicks perspiration moisture.

Usually, and certainly in Spain on longer mountain rides, I always have a backpack on, and I noticed that the shirt will get and feel really wet and that it doesn’t dry too quickly. With 35-degree celsius rides and a backpack, a damp back can hardly be avoided, so we can’t expect the FalzM for that to stay dry; but in comparison with other sets that I wore under the same conditions, that wet feeling was more intense with this shirt.

Conclusion

The JoelM and FalzM are very comfortable, well-fitting, technical pieces of kit which are very nice to wear and not only on your bike. I did wear them off the bike a lot over the summer and can confirm they are just nice clothes to wear. The breathability / wicking effect could be better. I have especially felt the limitations of this in fairly extreme (hot) circumstances.

Both pieces are not the cheapest. Fortunately, due to their versatility you get more bang for your buck.
